Howdy folks, Thelma here.
I was given the moniker "Thelma" because mom, well, her middle name IS "Louise," so it makes sense that she be given that one.
In just a few, short days, we'll be flying to Chicago, picking up our rental car, and then beginning the epic journey to follow Route 66. Louise has only been dropping hints, since I turned 16, that she wanted to do this. Whether it was a Route 66 magnet for my refrigerator or a Route 66 map...she's been not-so-subtly letting me know that this is an adventure I needed to add to my "bucket list." An adventure, I might add, that if I took without her, would result in an immediate dis-owning.
We do have some ground rules for our journey:
1. Sometimes, depending on the town/city, Route 66 will have been re-routed throughout the years. The map shows multiple versions; we can choose. In that case, the oldest route will be chosen.
2. Detours are expected, especially if something looks the least bit interesting.
3. Due to the detours, expect to hear about U-turns.
4. We WILL be seeking out the iconic, the weird, the unusual. If you have suggestions for us, please leave them in the comments.
5. Touristy-ness is required. We will not shy away from visiting the salient tourist traps of the cities/towns we visit. Nor, will we avoid the local cuisine (dietary restrictions and allergies excepted, of course. Thelma chooses life!).
6. Touristy-ness included, we will also not eschew back-roads, little-knowns, and best-kept-secrets. If you know of any, please let us know!
7. Locals are the best resources. We plan to make friends.
8. And, with all the best intentions we have, we do "aim to misbehave." :) Pops, please make sure you have bail-money for us! (Kidding...we think...)
Please feel free to check back with us as we journey, and join us for this adventure. We'll try to update as best we can while on the road.
Adventures and the open road await...
